Problems developing relationships
and anxiety regarding intimacy are quite
common. The process of getting close, developing intimacy - both
emotional and physical - can be overwhelming for individuals of
all ages with social/performance anxiety.
Our internet culture has greatly "enabled" this problem. Social
anxiety sufferers often use the internet at the expense of
healthy socialization. The internet reinforces avoidant personality
characteristics and behavior as users experience less potential
for being evaluated or scrutinized.
Pharmaceutical marketing has further enabled the development
of our synthetic society by medicalizing what all too often
are emotional/psychological problems. For example, a huge
percentage of “erectile dysfunction” and other
sexually based challenges are really anxiety/performance-
based.
Consider the following patient profiles:
Brian was an attractive 35-year-old, and a relatively successful
engineer. He was an “involuntary virgin”
who spent 15-20 hours a week having cyber-sex at the expense
of developing a real relationship. Doris was a 36-year-old
single, attractive, straight woman with a Masters' degree, who
worked in her family business. She had never experienced intimacy
with a member of the opposite sex. Shelly was a 16-year-old
honor roll student with absolutely no true friends. Ed was
a 19-year-old who stayed in his room during his first semester at
college, avoiding social interaction at all costs, while dependent
on the internet. Ron was 45 and the chief financial officer
for a mid-sized corporation. He was depressed due to his intimacy
problem of “premature ejaculation”. Don was a
28-year-old bodybuilder who could charm women socially, but
had never experienced intercourse because of anxiety-based “erectile
dysfunction”. There are countless more stories.
