I am frequently asked, “can you refer me to a therapist
where I live?” These calls occur daily, and come from
large cities such as Dallas, London, Toronto, Los Angeles,
Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles etc., as well as, from rural areas.
The answer to this question is “no”; not because
I do not want to, but because there are very few therapists
or established programs specializing in the treatment of social
anxiety, social phobia, and shyness. The reason for this is
that the psychotherapy community’s confusion about social
anxiety, stemming from the fact that individuals with this
problem are extremely resistant and often do not seek help.
Recent pharmaceutical marketing has further complicated treatment
issues leading many consumers perplexed and believing that
a pill might be a “cure”. Many entrepreneurs have
attempted to capitalize on this marketing becoming overnight
shyness “experts”. For example, there are countless
examples of magic and quick fixes available on the internet.
Having worked with many thousands of individuals of all ages
since 1978, I have seen everything from a total “cure”
to the problem being permanent; and everything in between.
Resolution to the problem requires hard and focused work.
Therefore Jonathan has developed a system where therapy can
be provided via telephone. This therapy is productive for
individuals who have “initiative” regarding healing,
and who are motivated and verbal. It can also be effective
for parents of individuals with social anxiety and related
problems, who are overly dependent and not capable of “initiative”.
This therapy is only available for persons who live too far
away to travel to our office.
Here is how it works. Call 800-248-2034. Jonathan will return
your call as soon as possible. Please leave a number, and
general time when you are available to avoid the possibility
playing telephone tag. Time is important for you and for Jonathan.
Jonathan and you agree on a mutually practical time for the
“evaluation” session. He gives you a telephone
number to call for the evaluation. The purpose of this session
is to define the specifics of your problem, focus on your
goals, get a brief history, orient you to the process of therapy,
and answer your questions. You motivation level and suitability
for telephone therapy will be assessed during this session.
Sessions are $180 for 36 minutes with Jonathan; with associates
$110 for 40 minutes. Payment methods include credit card, check,
and money order.
